“than”  & “then” 這兩個字長相與音標很類似，但是在用法上則大相逕庭．

 “than” 可扮演連接詞或介係詞的角色：

當連接詞有不平等的比較與優先次序的意涵

<1> He is more intelligent than Janice.

<2> My mother is older than yours.

<3> I'd rather have corn flakes than a bran muffin.

<4> I'd rather go to the theater than watch TV.

當介係詞時則有 “in comparison with” 的意義

<5> Her love meant more to him than money.

<6> He finished the card game with fewer chips than he had starting out.

“then” 有更多的應用：

當副詞

<7> He brushed his teeth and then went to bed.

<8> Mary thought back to her teenage years; she had more energy then.

<9> If you plan to be late, then give me a call when you're leaving.

<10> I have a slew of household chores to tend to this weekend. Then there's the
car that needs washing.

當名詞

<11> That restaurant will close at the end of the month. Until then, let's continue
to eat there.

當形容詞

<12> The then mayor declared that date a public holiday.
